Veteran Sri Lankan playback singer and renowned vocalist Dr. Nanda Malini, affectionately known as the “Voice of the Nation,” has passed away at the age of 83.

Dr. Nanda Malini was born on August 23, 1943, in Lewanduwa, Aluthgama. She later attended Sri Gunananda Vidyalaya in Kotahena, Colombo, where her musical talents began to flourish under the guidance of her teacher, T.N. Margaret Perera.

Her journey in music began at a young age when she joined the “Lama Mandapaya” programme on Radio Ceylon, presented by the legendary broadcaster and lyricist Karunaratne Abeysekera. She made her early mark by singing the song “Budu Saadu.”

Over the decades, Nanda Malini became one of the most influential and respected voices in Sri Lankan music. Her remarkable contribution to Sinhala light music and her distinctive vocal style earned her a lasting place in the country’s cultural history.

Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in Sri Lankan music, leaving behind a rich musical legacy cherished by generations of listeners.
