The Cabinet has approved a proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to identify areas occupied by plantation workers on state-owned plantation lands.

These lands are managed by the State Plantation Corporation and regional plantation companies. The proposal includes drafting legislation to officially designate these areas as new settlement villages.

A special discussion on this proposal took place at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, under the patronage of President Wickremesinghe.

The meeting saw unanimous agreement on the necessity of the legislation to formally recognize the dwellings of plantation workers as new villages.

Parliamentarian Mano Ganesan highlighted the importance of securing land rights for current plantation residents, presenting a proposal to the President to address this issue.

President Wickremesinghe reiterated the government's commitment to ongoing programs aimed at providing freehold land and housing rights to residents in villages, towns, and plantations.
