The Immigration and Emigration Department has announced the introduction of a new, efficient, and secure e-passport for Sri Lankans, effective January 1, 2025.
In a media release, the Department's Additional Controller General detailed a new methodology designed to simplify the passport application process.
Starting July 16, 2024, applicants must register online at [https://www.immigration.gov.lk](https://www.immigration.gov.lk) before applying for a Sri Lankan passport. This new procedure will be implemented beginning Friday, July 19, for those who registered on July 16. The current application method remains in effect until tomorrow, July 18.
Once registered, applicants will be given priority in obtaining their passports. The department emphasized that passports cannot be obtained by visiting the office without a previously assigned date and time.
