Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles and IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon disclosed that the Yukthiya operation has recovered drugs valued at Rs 19.075 billion since its launch in December 2023. They also announced plans to seize assets worth Rs 1425 million from individuals involved in drug trafficking.
Launching another phase of the operation on July 4, 2024, IGP Tennakoon stated their goal to reduce crime rates by 50 per cent, attributing many crimes including thefts, murders, and domestic violence to drug-related activities.
Further revelations included estimates of 500,000 drug addicts nationwide, with 5,978 identified drug traffickers, 91 per cent of whom have been apprehended, and 3,766 addicts directed to rehabilitation centers. The focus remains on dismantling drug supply chains and prosecuting those involved.
Highlighting a concerning trend, the IGP noted local fishermen turning to drug transportation due to higher financial incentives compared to traditional fishing.
Emphasizing the role of religious leaders in rehabilitation efforts, the IGP underscored that police efforts alone cannot address addiction issues.
Minister Alles reaffirmed commitment to continue the Yukthiya operation, targeting the eradication of drugs and the underworld. Despite facing threats, both he and IGP Tennakoon vowed to persevere with the initiative initiated during Tennakoon's tenure as DIG.
The operation has involved distributing files on drug traffickers and sellers to every police station across the country, ensuring comprehensive enforcement at the local level.
