Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed Maligakanda Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama Weerasinghe that Interpol has launched an operation to arrest Dr. Jayanath Buthpitiya, a former Health Ministry official and consultant, wanted in connection with the substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) procurement case.
Dr. Buthpitiya, the ninth suspect in the case, has been issued a Red Notice through Interpol. The Deputy Solicitor General stated that Interpol will arrest Buthpitiya and hand him over to the International Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Additionally, investigators have discovered 12 government seals in the possession of former National Medicinal Regulation Authority Chief Executive Officer Vijith Gunasekera, the 12th suspect in the case. Gunasekera had previously confessed to possessing only two government seals.
The Magistrate ordered a full-scale report on these seals from the government forensic expert investigating the suspicious documents.
The case, involving the procurement of substandard IVIG, was taken up before the Maligakanda Magistrate, with eleven suspects, including former Health Minister Kheliya Rambukwella and former Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Chandraguptha, appearing in court.
