The Colombo High Court has handed down life sentences to seven Pakistani and Iranian nationals convicted of heroin possession and trafficking.
Judge Adithya Patabendige delivered this verdict during today's (14) court session. The convictions stem from a Sri Lanka Navy operation in 2022, where the individuals were apprehended while transporting 123 kg of heroin within Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.
Following the Navy's operation, the Attorney General pursued indictments against the suspects in the Colombo High Court.
Appearing before the court today, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to their sentencing to life imprisonment.
Furthermore, the court acceded to the convicted foreign nationals' request for extradition to their respective countries to serve their sentences.
