The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has reported over 25,000 dengue infections within the first five months of this year. Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the NDCU, highlighted a concerning trend with many dengue breeding sites being detected in schools.

Reflecting on last year's data, Dr. Samaraweera noted a significant surge in dengue cases, with nearly 90,000 infections reported by the end of 2023. "In January alone, we saw over 10,000 cases. Although the numbers declined in February, March, and April, we observed a slight increase again by the end of May," he said, warning of a potential rise in cases due to the ongoing monsoon rains.

The NDCU's extensive inspection efforts revealed 28,310 mosquito breeding sites out of 93,874 premises inspected. Alarmingly, mosquito larvae were found in nearly one in five schools, and 9% of breeding sites were located in places like tuition centers.

Najith Sumanasena, President of the Health Entomology Officer’s Association, emphasized the impact of adverse weather conditions, which forced the postponement of organized anti-dengue programs.
