A contempt of court application against former State Minister Diana Gamage has been scheduled for support on June 26 by the Supreme Court. The application alleges that Gamage committed contempt through statements made at a media conference on May 9.
The Supreme Court directed the petitioner to serve notices on Gamage and set the matter for support on June 26.
The application was filed by Rehan Jayawickrema, former Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council. He alleges that Gamage's statements intended to disrespect the Supreme Court's authority, in violation of Section 3(1)(a) of the Contempt of Court, Tribunal, or Institution Act No: 8 of 2024.
In a landmark judgment on May 8, the Supreme Court disqualified Gamage from being a Member of Parliament, ruling that she is not a citizen of Sri Lanka.
Jayawickrema asserts that at the media conference, Gamage portrayed herself as a victim of injustice, alleging the court's decision was an attack on women and a result of political conspiracy based on hate and vengeance. He claims her statements aimed to undermine the court's judgment and present herself as wronged.
