The Colombo High Court has released former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and four others from a case alleging they caused a Rs. 1.84 billion loss to the Sri Lankan government through Greek bond investments in 2012.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) initiated legal action against the five individuals following a complaint by former MP Sujeewa Senasinghe.
Senasinghe's complaint alleged that the Central Bank purchased Treasury Bonds from the Government of Greece during its financial crisis in 2012, resulting in the substantial loss.
After investigating the complaint, the Bribery Commission filed a case in the Colombo High Court against Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Kankanamge Gamage Don Dharmasena Deerasinghe, Bendarage Don Wasantha Ananda Silva, Chandrasiri Jayasinghe Panditha Siriwardena, and Harankaha Arachchilage Karunaratne.
During proceedings, defense lawyers raised initial objections, contending that the case lacked merit. The judge accepted these objections, leading to the release of the accused.
