State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon announced today that a special program will be launched to cut down and remove trees at risk of collapsing within the jurisdiction of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
Speaking at a press conference, Tennakoon stated that Sri Lanka Army and Civil Defence Force personnel will be deployed for the removal of these high-risk trees.
The operation will be conducted under the full supervision of the CMC, with plans to plant new trees to replace those removed. This initiative comes in response to adverse weather conditions that have already resulted in seven fatalities due to fallen trees.
According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the severe weather has affected 55,406 individuals from 14,754 families across 212 district secretariat divisions in 20 districts.
