The water levels in the upper regions of the Kelani and Kalu Ganga rivers have reached caution levels due to heavy rainfall in their catchment areas, according to Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara Bandara, Director of Irrigation (Hydrology) at the Irrigation Department.
This increase in water levels is the first occurrence since the onset of the north-east monsoon. Bandara specifically urged residents in the upper areas of the Kelani and Kalu Ganga, particularly near the Ratnapura district, to remain vigilant against potential sudden floods.
"There's a significant risk of sudden flooding in these areas if the rainfall continues at 100mm," Bandara warned.
Moreover, he noted that due to the heavy rains in the Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts in the Southern Province and parts of the North-Western Province, the water levels in these regions are currently elevated.
