One person was killed, and at least 13 others were injured when a van skidded off the road and crashed into a tree in Galgamuwa on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura Road early this morning.
Police said that at least 15 persons were traveling in the van on their way to Anuradhapura when the vehicle skidded off the road near Me Oya, as the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
They said one person died at the scene, while 13 others, including 7 women, were admitted to Galgamuwa Hospital. Seven individuals who were in critical condition were transferred to Anuradhapura Hospital for further treatment.
The deceased has been identified as a 69-year-old resident of Embilipitiya.
The Galgamuwa Police are investigating the incident.
