Amidst a surge in rainfall, the primary reservoirs across the nation have witnessed a significant rise, reaching an impressive 80% capacity, according to Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara Bandara, Director of Irrigation (Hydrology).

Deduru Oya reservoir in the Kurunegala district, along with Rajanganaya and Angamuwa reservoirs in Anuradhapura District, alongside various reservoirs in Hambantota and Matara Districts, have begun to overflow, marking the robust impact of the heightened precipitation.

"Medium-sized tanks in the Matara district have commenced overflow, with water levels anticipated to rise further in the coming days," Eng. Sugeeshwara Bandara remarked.

Simultaneously, the Irrigation Department has issued a cautionary advisory today for residents in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, and Sabaragamuwa districts to remain vigilant against potential flash floods triggered by heavy showers, expected to reach approximately 150 mm.

Residents in these regions, especially those with past encounters of sudden floods, are urged to exercise caution and monitor emerging flood risks closely. Moreover, inhabitants are advised to exercise prudence when utilizing rivers and canals, staying alert for sudden rises in water levels.

As heavy downpours persist, increased water levels have been recorded in several rivers including Deduru Oya, Maha Oya, Attanagalu Oya, Kelani Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Ging Ganga, Nilwala Ganga, and Bentara Ganga.
