The businessman accused of assaulting Dr. Alireza Delkhosh, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sri Lanka, has been granted bail after appearing before Colombo Fort Magistrate Kosala Senadeera today (22).

The 33-year-old individual was arrested and detained following allegations of assaulting the Iranian Ambassador near a shopping mall on Muttiah Road in Colombo 02 on May 18.

Reportedly, the altercation occurred as the diplomat was entering the shopping mall's car park. An argument ensued between the Ambassador and the suspect, leading to the latter assaulting the diplomat and attempting to flee in his vehicle.

During the confrontation, the Iranian Ambassador had exited his vehicle and placed his hand on the bonnet of the suspect's car, urging him to await police assistance. However, the suspect proceeded to start his vehicle and drive forward, resulting in a collision involving the Ambassador.

Subsequently, police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect, identified as a businessman residing at Ward Place in Colombo 07.
