Sri Lanka has achieved a remarkable milestone in tourism, surpassing 700,000 tourist arrivals within the first 14 weeks of the year, a feat accomplished in almost half the time compared to 2023.

According to provisional data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, from January 1 to April 15, the island nation welcomed a total of 718,315 international visitors.

The positive trend continued into April, with 82,531 tourists entering the country in the first 15 days alone, reaffirming Sri Lanka's sustained growth momentum.

Notably, the daily arrival average has seen a significant improvement, rising to around 5,502 in the month, compared to below 3,000 arrivals a year ago.

Sri Lanka has set ambitious targets for April, aiming for between 168,539 and 182,724 tourist arrivals. The current arrival momentum suggests that the country may achieve the lower bound of this target.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka is on track to surpass the 105,498 arrivals recorded in April last year, if the current trend persists. However, reaching April 2018 levels of tourist arrivals will require an even more accelerated momentum.

India leads the pack as the largest tourist traffic generator, contributing 17 percent of the total arrivals for April thus far. Following closely is the United Kingdom, accounting for 11 percent of tourist arrivals. With recent updates to travel advisories by UK authorities, Sri Lanka anticipates a surge in tourist arrivals from this market. Russia closely trails as the third-largest contributor, bringing in 10 percent of the total international visitors.
