The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is gearing up for a transition in the parliamentary representation of the Anuradhapura District following the unexpected passing of SLPP MP H. Nandasena.
Nandasena, aged 69, succumbed to a sudden illness earlier today, leaving behind a legacy of public service and political engagement.
Family members of the late parliamentarian confirmed his demise to Ada Derana, highlighting his significant contributions to both local and provincial governance. Nandasena had previously served as a member of the Padaviya Pradeshiya Sabha and held a provincial ministerial portfolio within the North Central Provincial Council.
However, his tenure faced a setback in May 2017 when he was relieved of his ministerial duties after participating in a Joint Opposition May Day rally. Undeterred by the setback, Nandasena continued his political journey, ultimately contesting the 2020 parliamentary election under the Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance banner and securing a seat in the Parliament of Sri Lanka, representing the Anuradhapura District.
As the nation mourns the loss of Nandasena, attention turns to his successor, with Weerasena Gamage emerging as the likely candidate to fill the vacant parliamentary seat. Gamage, who hails from the SLPP ranks, had garnered significant support in the 2020 elections, securing over 38,000 votes in the Anuradhapura District and clinching the 9th spot in the preferential votes list.
