The Fort Magistrate's Court has ordered the remand of a Sri Lankan husband and wife, accused of engaging in human trafficking by promising employment in the Ukrainian army, until March 21st.
They were arrested upon arriving at the Criminal Investigation Department's Illegal Trade, Smuggling Investigation, and Maritime Crime Investigation Unit.
The suspects, residents of Kadawata, include a man who works as an economics teacher.
The investigation has revealed that they facilitated the departure of 55 individuals from Sri Lanka, promising them jobs in the Ukrainian army.
The trafficking route involved sending individuals to Poland via India, then onward to Ukraine.
Some managed to enter Ukraine, while others returned without entering Poland.
There are also reports of a group sent to Azerbaijan, although their status remains unknown.
Tragically, three individuals who went to serve in the Ukrainian army have died.
