The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation that led to the arrest of 15 Indian fishermen and the seizure of their poaching trawler. This operation, carried out on Friday near the Kovilan Lighthouse in Kareinagar, is part of ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized fishing practices and safeguard the livelihoods of local fishermen.
The Northern Naval Command, vigilant in their patrols, spotted a group of Indian vessels engaging in unauthorized fishing activities. Swiftly responding, Fast Attack Craft were deployed to intercept and apprehend the trespassers.
The seized trawler, along with the detained fishermen, was escorted to the Kankesanthurai Harbour for further legal actions. They were handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector to initiate the necessary legal proceedings.
This successful operation adds to the Navy's ongoing efforts, marking a total of 16 Indian poaching trawlers and 125 Indian fishermen apprehended in Sri Lankan waters in 2024.
