Born on the 27th of November 1942, Mr. Asoka Tillakaratne is an alumnus of Nalanda Vidyalaya, Colombo. He applied for a position as an announcer in the Sri Lanka Radio Corporation in 1967.
Mr. Thilakarathna was appointed as an English announcer, and with the unquenchable desire to become a Sinhala announcer, he appeared for an examination again and was elected to the panel as a Sinhala announcer in 1969.
Mr.Asoka Thilakaratna who claimed a very solemn and clear voice personality, spread his command in many fields including a news reporting, studio,Oout broadcasting announcer, outdoor advertising artist and producer.
He later worked as the Controller of City Fm FM and pioneered the launch of Lakhada Radio in 1996.
His only elder brother was Ridgway Tillakaratne, a distinguished administrative officer and Chairman and Director General of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting corporation.
Veteran Announcer/Broadcaster and Media Manager Mr.Ashoka Thilakarathna started his broadcasting carrier as a relief Announcer of the English service of the SLBC in1966.
Then,in1969he switched over to Sinhala media,as a Sinhala Announcer.In1996 November switching over from SLBC to Lakhada,as the Manager of the program was a turning point for his journey.
Mr.Thilakaratna was an active member of the social media and also inspired lots of young journalists.

His body will be laid to rest at the Boralasgamuwa Florists parlor from the morning of March 14th for public honors.
Final rites will be performed on Friday, March 15th at 03.00 pm at the Boralasgamuwa Public Cemetery.
