A 52-year-old man arrested by the Nanuoya police on charges of abusing a schoolgirl, has been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment by the Nuwara Eliya High Court.
High Court Judge Viraj Weerasuriya delivered the verdict, ordering the accused to serve a decade in prison. The case dates back to 2011 when the parents of a 16-year-old girl filed a complaint with the Nanu Oya Police regarding the sexual abuse of their daughter in the Nanu Oya area.
After 13 years of pending legal proceedings, the High Court judge delivered the verdict based on the evidence presented against the accused.
In addition to the prison sentence, the High Court judge mandated the accused to pay Rs. 500,000 as compensation to the victim. Failure to comply with this order will result in an extension of the prison term by another three years.
Furthermore, the judge imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000 on the accused, with non-payment leading to an additional three-month extension of the prison sentence.
