Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa disclosed today that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is scheduled to engage in discussions with IMF officials next week. Premadasa outlined that his party intends to request IMF assistance for a comprehensive nutrition package aimed at addressing the challenges faced by women and school children in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Malwana MV in Dompe, Premadasa emphasized the urgent need to combat malnutrition among Sri Lankan women and children. Referring to data from a 2022 census, he highlighted that approximately 25 percent of school children in Sri Lanka are underweight, while women in the country face significant food insecurity.
Premadasa stated, "This is why we are going to seek a nutrition package from the IMF next week," underscoring the party's commitment to addressing this critical issue. Additionally, he announced plans to collaborate with other international financial agencies such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to introduce a comprehensive assistance package, including free midday meals for school children.
Highlighting the socio-economic challenges faced by impoverished families, Premadasa noted that many school children in Sri Lanka are forced into nighttime employment due to financial constraints. He stressed the importance of maintaining a robust education system to prevent the proliferation of social issues, stating, "Closure of schools results in opening of 1000 prisons, and this is why it is essential to ensure a sound education system in the country."
