The minister's warning comes in the wake of mounting concerns over the airline's financial sustainability and operational efficiency.
In alignment with President's proposal, the government has committed to easing a portion of SriLankan Airlines' staggering debt burden. The relief package amounts to USD 510 million, a significant portion of the USD 1.2 billion owed to various banks and institutions. This measure is expected to provide the airline with a much-needed financial reprieve and pave the way for comprehensive restructuring efforts.
With the clock ticking, SriLankan Airlines has unveiled ambitious plans for a thorough restructuring process aimed at revitalizing its operations and restoring financial stability. The proposed roadmap encompasses stringent cost-cutting measures and enhanced financial discipline to streamline operations and improve profitability.
Minister de Silva emphasized the critical importance of prudent financial management and urged for a collaborative approach between the airline's management and trade unions to navigate through the challenging times ahead.
In response to the minister's directives, company authorities provided insights into SriLankan Airlines' current operational status. The airline currently operates a fleet of 16 aircraft, facilitating both long-haul and short-haul flights. Additionally, they disclosed plans for the acquisition of three Belgian aircraft and one Fit Air aircraft on lease to augment operational capabilities.
