The leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Maithripala Sirisena, has pledged the party's backing for a proposal to abolish the Executive Presidency.
Speaking at an SLFP media conference themed 'We Stand for Freedom' ('Nidahasa Wenuwen Api'), the former President disclosed that steps are being taken to introduce such a proposal in the near future.
Sirisena's announcement comes amidst growing calls for reforms to the country's governance structure.
However, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has voiced opposition to the timing of such a move, stating that it is not conducive to abolish the Executive Presidency at this juncture.
