Sri Lanka is set to make its mark at the upcoming Asian Weightlifting Continental Championship, scheduled to take place from February 3 to 10 at the Yunusabad Sports Complex in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The event, organized by the Asian Weightlifting Federation, serves as a crucial platform for athletes eyeing qualification for the Paris Olympic Games later this year.

A three-member squad from Sri Lanka, under the guidance of National Coach R. B. Wickramasinghe, will be competing against over 100 participants. The team comprises two international-level female weightlifters, Hansani Gomes (49kg) and Chathurika Priyanthi (87kg), in the Women’s category. In the Men’s category, Indika Dissanayaka (73kg) will represent Sri Lanka on the international stage.

Coach Wickramasinghe expressed confidence in the team's abilities, anticipating a successful outing at the championship. The Asian Weightlifting Continental Championship is a crucial stepping stone as it marks the penultimate qualifying event for the Paris Olympic Games. Following this, the final opportunity for qualification will be the IWF World Cup, scheduled to be held from March 31 to April 11 in Phuket, Thailand.
