The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to extend the 'Aswesuma' scheme for welfare benefits payments, introducing several significant revisions aimed at enhancing its efficacy and inclusivity.
Proposed by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stability, and National Policies, the amendments to the scheme reflect a commitment to supporting vulnerable groups amid evolving economic challenges.
Key revisions include:
Extension of Valid Periods: The validity period for the vulnerable social group eligible for 'Aswesuma' benefits has been extended from April 1 to December 31, 2024. Additionally, the transitional social group, comprising individuals whose incomes have temporarily deteriorated due to economic crises, will now qualify for benefits from January 1 to December 31, 2024.
Consolidation of Groups: The existing vulnerable and transitional social groups will be merged, identifying 800,000 families as a vulnerable group eligible for a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 from January 1 to December 31, 2024.
Increased Support for Specific Cases: Payments of Rs. 7,500 each will be disbursed to patients suffering from unidentified kidney diseases, disabled persons, and elderly individuals listed under 'Aswesuma' families, starting April 2024, pending confirmation of information.
Adjustments in Payment Distribution: The payment for patients with unidentified kidney diseases, disabled individuals, and the elderly will increase to Rs. 7,500, effective January 1, 2024. District Secretaries/Divisional Secretaries will oversee the disbursement process.
Second Round Applications: The commencement of applications for the second round is scheduled within the first quarter of 2024, with finalization by June 2024. Payments will commence in July, accommodating up to 2.4 million eligible families.
These revisions signify a proactive approach by the government to address the evolving needs of vulnerable populations and ensure the effectiveness of social welfare programs in mitigating hardship and fostering resilience within the community.
