Despite an unfortunate incident during yesterday morning's rehearsals, where four paratroopers were injured, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva confirmed to Zira Daily that paratrooping for the Independence Day celebrations at Galle Face Green will continue.
During the rehearsal for the National Independence Day celebrations, two parachutes collided mid-air, resulting in the injury of four paratroopers from the Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Air Force. Two paratroopers found themselves landing on a hotel building due to parachute malfunction, while another landed on the ground after colliding with another paratrooper.
Officials said that the accident reported due to a rare and unexpected change in wind direction. At least 40 paratroopers, including contingents from the SLAF, Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and the Special Task Force (STF), participated in the rehearsals.
General Silva visited the injured paratroopers at the National Hospital and the Army Hospital, confirming that their injuries were minor and reassuring their prompt recovery.
He expressed confidence that the paratroopers would soon resume their training for future Paratrooping activities.
