The Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, is set to embark on a significant two-day official visit to Sri Lanka from February 3rd to 4th, 2024. The visit holds particular importance as it coincides with the anticipated signing of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (SLTFTA), announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister Thavisin's visit comes at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has extended the invitation as part of bilateral diplomatic efforts. Thavisin is scheduled to participate in the ceremonial celebrations marking Sri Lanka's 76th Anniversary of Independence as a Guest of Honour.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Thai Prime Minister's itinerary includes official discussions with President Wickremesinghe aimed at bolstering bilateral ties and exploring avenues for cooperation. The highlight of the visit is the formal signing of the SLTFTA, a historic agreement poised to enhance trade and investment relations between the two nations.
The signing ceremony, to be attended by high-ranking officials from both countries, will witness Phumtham Wechayachai, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, and Nalin Fernando, Sri Lanka's Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, sealing the agreement.
