The passenger ferry service connecting India's Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai (KKS) in Jaffna is poised to resume operations on February 15, as announced by the Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister.
The Indian government has granted permission for the service to recommence, following the completion of initial programs in preparation for the launch.
While the official inauguration took place on October 20, 2023, marking the end of a 40-year hiatus in ferry service between the two nations, the actual commencement of regular operations is scheduled for February 15. The arrival of the 'Cheriyapani' passenger ferry at the Kankesanthurai port was a symbolic moment during the launch, commemorated with a plaque exchange ceremony.
The 'Cheriyapani' is a state-of-the-art vessel, measuring 35 meters in length and 9.6 meters in beam, owned by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). With a high-speed capability, it can accommodate up to 150 passengers.
The journey from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai port is estimated to take approximately four hours. Pricing for the ferry service is set at Sri Lankan Rupees 26,750 for a one-way trip and SL Rs. 53,500 for a round trip, providing an accessible and efficient mode of transportation between the two countries.
