Tensions between Japan and Sri Lanka, triggered by the cancellation of a light rail transit project, have not hindered a significant effort to empower women in the region.
Despite uneasiness, Japanese funding amounting to 343,000 US dollars has been channeled through UN Women and a local organization to benefit 600 women-led micro-enterprises.
UN Women, a United Nations agency, disclosed that this initiative is part of a broader one-year project named 'Empowering Women in Crisis,' commencing in February 2023. The project, executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs, and Social Empowerment, focuses on providing humanitarian aid to women severely affected by the socioeconomic crisis in Sri Lanka.
At an event in Battaramulla, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Mizukoshi Hideaki, expressed satisfaction with Japan's support for this impactful initiative. The project, spanning five districts in Sri Lanka, aims to foster women's economic empowerment, fostering a positive outlook on the bilateral partnership between Japan and UN Women.
In addition to financial assistance, entrepreneurs grappling with the challenges of soaring food inflation and the rising cost of living received provisions to support their daily needs. UN Women emphasized that this extra support enables these women to allocate more resources towards their respective business ventures, fostering economic resilience in the face of adversity.
