In a promising start to the year, Sri Lanka has witnessed a significant influx of international tourists during the first 18 days of January, surpassing the 121,000 mark.
Provisional data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority revealed that from January 1 to 18, the island nation warmly welcomed 121,446 visitors from around the globe.
The weekly arrival average for January stands at approximately 45,000, with a daily average of about 6,747, indicating a steady flow of tourists exploring the diverse attractions of the island.
Taking the lead as the largest contributor to tourist traffic, the Russian Federation holds a dominant position, constituting 16 percent of the total arrivals for January. This marks a continuation of its prominence since the start of the year 2024.
India, a significant source market throughout 2023, secured the second position, accounting for 15 percent of the tourists arriving in the island nation. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom claimed the third spot, contributing 8 percent to the overall arrivals.
Other notable markets shaping the tourism landscape in Sri Lanka include Germany, China, France, and Australia.
