The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a second-day search at the center of the human immunoglobulin scandal, seizing computers and medicine samples for further investigation, following a court order.
The inspection of Isolez Biotech Pharma AG (Pvt) Ltd. in Amandoluwa, Seeduwa, took place after the owner and primary suspect, Sudath Janaka Fernando, failed to cooperate during the initial visit on January 8.
Accompanied by officials from the Lanka Electricity Company in Seeduwa, Scenes of Crime Officials (SOCO) in Seeduwa, Negombo Police, and Seeduwa Police, the NMRA and CID officials, along with engineers, examined the plant around noon. The chief suspect, currently in remand custody, was brought to the site by Prisons Department officials.
LECO Engineers facilitated the connection of the factory to the main electricity supply, resolving issues encountered during the first visit when the chief suspect refused to show the principal switchboard. Samples of unidentified liquid medicine stored in bottles and vials, suspected to be falsely labeled human immunoglobulin, were collected from refrigerators.
CID officials seized seven computers from the plant office of Sudath Janaka Fernando, with some hard disk drives already missing. The search operation lasted approximately five hours before the NMRA officials sealed the plant, and the suspect was returned to Welikada Remand Prison.
The case is scheduled to be heard at the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
