The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) urged an independent inquiry into the recent increase in police-related fatalities. This call comes following the fatal shooting of a civilian in Narammala by a police officer in plain clothes last week.
In addition to expressing concern over the rise in fatalities, the BASL criticized Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles. The minister's announcement that he would release a list of individuals obstructing Operation Yukthiya, an anti-narcotics initiative criticized for its heavy-handed approach, has fueled further controversy.
The BASL's statement highlighted its objection to what it deemed "irresponsibly misleading" statements by a government minister. Such statements were deemed detrimental to the crucial role played by lawyers in safeguarding public interest.
Emphasizing the justice system's role as a vital check and balance, the BASL firmly opposed attacks on it for political gain. The association vehemently denounced the use of divisive and deceptive rhetoric undermining the rule of law and those dedicated to upholding it.
