In the past year alone, an alarming trend has emerged with more than 100,000 offensive video clips of children being shared on social media, contributed by various individuals.

Acting IGP Deshabandu Thennakoon revealed that these videos depict children subjected to sexual abuse, exposing their nudity, and spreading rapidly across social media platforms. The police have launched investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for uploading these disturbing videos.

Thennakoon stressed that stringent action will be taken against each individual involved. "The investigations have already commenced, and it is disheartening to note that even some professionals are implicated in these offenses. However, we are committed to taking action against everyone involved in these acts," he stated.

The Acting IGP also announced that the police are prepared to implement strict measures this year to prevent minors from becoming victims of such incidents.
