In the past year, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has taken action by disconnecting the water supply of more than 80,000 consumers due to outstanding bills.
According to a spokesperson from the NWSDB, a total of 80,970 consumers, accounting for a fraction of the approximately 3 million clientele, have experienced water supply disruptions.
Among those affected, 63,150 are domestic consumers, while 17,820 fall into the non-domestic category.
The NWSDB has revealed that they are striving to recover a substantial amount of Rs. 1,909 million in arrears from consumers whose water supply has been disconnected. Additionally, outstanding payments totaling Rs. 6,118 million are pending from consumers whose water supply remains at risk of disconnection.
The board provided a breakdown of the outstanding amounts, indicating Rs. 182 million owed by hospitals, Rs. 175 million from schools, and Rs. 116 million from entities such as the Sri Lanka Army and the police.
In a bid to facilitate the re-establishment of water supply, the NWSDB has outlined a solution for disconnected consumers. By settling 25% of the overdue tariff payments, these consumers can have their water supply reinstated, with the option to fulfill the remaining payments at a later date.
