Sri Lanka's Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara, has announced plans to introduce a database for tuk-tuk drivers, issuing them QR codes.
The system aims to enhance organization and facilitate internet-based trip bookings. Discussions also covered the establishment of a 'professional council for three-wheeler drivers' and a social security system.
Despite over a million registered three-wheelers, research indicates that less than half are operating as taxis.
An interim sectoral steering committee is proposed until a formal structure is established. In 2022, amidst a fuel crisis, estimates suggested around 350,000 commercial tuk-tuk drivers in Sri Lanka.
