In a move aimed at supporting tea cultivators, Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera announced on Tuesday (16 Jan.) a substantial reduction in the prices of three key fertilizers crucial for tea cultivation.
The prices of T-750, T-709, and T-200 fertilizers have been slashed by Rs. 2,000 each.
Minister Amaraweera disclosed that directives have been issued to Dr. Jagath Perera, Chairman of the state-owned Ceylon Fertilizer Company, and the Colombo Commercial Fertilizer Company to implement the price reductions. Consequently, the prices of T-750 and T-709 fertilizers are now set at Rs. 7,735, while the T-200 fertilizer is reduced to Rs. 5,500.
This price adjustment applies to both small and medium-scale tea cultivators, fostering an environment conducive to their economic well-being. Large-scale tea cultivation companies will also benefit, with the fertilizers being sold at Rs. 9,735.
Minister Amaraweera highlighted that this strategic move is expected to result in a 50% reduction in fertilizer prices for tea cultivation. The current cost of the mentioned fertilizers stands at Rs. 13,000. The decision is part of a broader initiative to encourage the use of fertilizers in tea cultivation, ultimately aiming to enhance the overall productivity of the country's tea industry.
