Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Jeevan Thondaman has announced the upcoming formulation of a water price formula in collaboration with advisors from the National Water Supply Board and the Asian Development Bank.
The goal is to introduce a transparent price formula for water charges that not only reduces the financial burden on consumers but also contributes to a decrease in electricity bills, according to a statement from the Government Department of Information.
Minister Thondaman made this announcement during a discussion at the Peradeniya University Institute of Water Research and Technology. He emphasized that the proposed formula aligns with the government's commitment to ensuring a safe, affordable, and reliable water supply for all citizens within a clear and consistent framework.
In recent developments, the National Steering Committee on Water Sector Reforms convened to finalize key policies and guidelines in the water sector. Minister Thondaman expressed readiness to share Sri Lanka's new national policies on Drinking Water and Water Safety, along with updated Guidelines on Water Supply Connections, with the public for feedback.
These initiatives are part of the larger US$ 200 million reforms supported by the Asian Development Bank in the water sector. Minister Thondaman underscored that the primary objective of these reforms is to establish a more sustainable water sector in Sri Lanka, one that is environmentally conscious and responsive to consumer needs and climate considerations.
