In a recent update, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi announced that, except for 15 inmates, all individuals who had escaped from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre are now in custody.
Despite the escape incident, Major Gen. Hettiarachchi reassured the public that the rehabilitation center has resumed its normal activities.
The chaos unfolded on Friday (12), as clashes erupted between two groups of inmates within the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, resulting in the escape of numerous detainees. At least 25 individuals sustained injuries during the violent confrontation, with five still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Disturbingly, some of the surrendered escapees alleged that they were subjected to repeated harassment by fellow detainees while at the camp. Authorities are now faced with the task of investigating and addressing the issues that led to the escape and the reported mistreatment within the rehabilitation center.
