Japan has formally requested Sri Lanka to bear the expenses associated with the termination of a $1.5 billion Japanese-funded light rail initiative. Japanese Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi conveyed this message during discussions with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and a delegation from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

Minister Shunichi emphasized the crucial nature of settling the costs to facilitate the restart of halted projects.

SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva underscored the significance of the Japanese Finance Minister's message, highlighting the urgency for Sri Lanka to promptly address debt restructuring, adhere to the IMF program, and settle dues related to the canceled LRT project.
