In a parliamentary session today, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara acknowledged that the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) had not yet received any formal proposal regarding a reduction in electricity tariffs.
Minister Wijesekara assured the public that the proposal would be submitted to the PUCSL within the next few days.
Addressing concerns raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa about the delay in presenting the proposal, Minister Wijesekara explained that the process involved meticulous calculations based on the balance sheet ending on December 31, 2023, which commenced on January 1.
The Minister informed Parliament that the proposal for electricity tariff reduction would be presented to the director board of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for approval today. Following the approval, it would then be promptly forwarded to the PUCSL.
He emphasized that once the proposal reaches the PUCSL, the commission will adhere to legal procedures, taking steps to gather public opinions on the proposed tariff adjustments within 21 days. The final decision on the price reduction mechanism will be subject to the approval of the PUCSL.
