In a joint initiative, the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Mass Media, Bandula Gunawardena, alongside the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, officially inaugurated the commencement of track rehabilitation work at Galgamuwa Railway Station. This marks the initiation of the second phase of the Line of Credit project aimed at upgrading the railway line from Maho to Anuradhapura.
The ambitious project, which encompasses track rehabilitation and associated works from Maho to Anuradhapura on the mainline, is part of an Indian Line of Credit (LOC) totaling USD 318 million. Executed by the Indian Public Sector company, IRCON, the entire venture carries a cost of USD 91.27 million.
The ongoing second phase of rehabilitation, spanning from Maho to Anuradhapura, is slated for completion within six months, according to the statement released by the Indian High Commission in Colombo. The project is a continuation of the earlier rehabilitation work undertaken by IRCON from Maho to Omanthai (128Km).
The ceremony, attended by State Minister of Mass Media Shantha Bandara and senior officials from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Transport, served as a platform for Minister Bandula Gunawardena to express gratitude to India for their support in the transport sector. Commending the commendable efforts of IRCON in Sri Lanka over the past few years, Minister Gunawardena also advocated for strengthened railway cooperation between the two nations. The joint venture signifies a significant stride towards enhancing the railway infrastructure and connectivity between Sri Lanka and India.
