This seismic event is not an isolated incident, rather it follows a series of four earthquakes that occurred along the Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean near the Maldives on December 29 of the previous year. These earthquakes had magnitudes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 and depths between 7.7 km to 10 km, as reported by the US Geological Survey.
