The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun an investigation into the preacher named Ruwan Prasanna Gunaratna, who promoted 'mass suicide' through his teachings and later died by suicide. The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court has also called for an investigation into whether the deceased preacher received funds from any organizations and how the money was spent.
CID has also launched an investigation into the deaths of seven individuals that occurred under suspicious circumstances. The bodies of a young woman and a man were found, and it is suspected that they died after consuming a strange concoction. These individuals were reported to be followers of a religious preacher who had previously committed suicide.
Ruwan Prasanna Gunaratna, who engaged in preaching activities throughout the island, was found dead from poisoning in December, and it is believed that he committed suicide. A few days later, his wife was reported to have committed suicide by consuming a concoction after feeding poison to her two sons and daughter.
The 21-year-old woman and 34-year-old man who died recently were found to have attended the funeral of the religious preacher. Investigators suspect that all seven deaths may be the result of ingestion of the same type of poison.
