President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe is considering the prorogation of Parliament on January 27, ZiraDaily learns.
The President intends to address the nation through the House during its reconvening for the upcoming session post the Independence Day celebrations on February 4.
According to a reliable source, the President is contemplating a prorogation period of approximately ten days. It is important to note that prorogation is a temporary recess of Parliament and should not exceed a duration of more than two months.
The source also indicated that the summoning of Parliament may be subject to change through another Presidential Proclamation, provided it is summoned for a date no less than three days from the issuance of the fresh proclamation.
In the event of a prorogation, the Proclamation is expected to specify the date for the commencement of the new session of Parliament as outlined in Paragraph (3) of Article 70 of the Constitution.
