In a recent meeting with professionals in Jaffna, President Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed his endorsement of the 13th Amendment as a key driver for fostering a robust local economy.

The President assured non-interference in the implementation of the amendment during the discussion.

During the meeting, President Wickremesinghe urged learning from the economic models of countries such as Japan, Korea, the UK, and France, emphasizing the importance of independent regional economies. He highlighted the need for devolution through laws and pointed out that, currently, only the Western Province enjoys financial independence. The President called upon each province to actively utilize the powers granted by the 13th Amendment for their development.

The endorsement of the 13th Amendment by President Wickremesinghe signals a commitment to empowering regional economies and fostering economic growth while assuring a hands-off approach from the central government. This move aligns with a broader strategy to draw lessons from successful international models and implement measures to encourage development at the regional level.
