In a chilling turn of events, the demise of a 75-year-old piano teacher residing in Wijerama Mawatha, Cinnamon Garden in Colombo 07, has been disclosed as a murder. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Subramaniam Selvakumar, an unmarried man hired for various tasks, was arrested in connection with the heinous crime.
The incident was reported to the Cinnamon Garden Police on December 15, raising suspicions about the teacher's sudden death. The Colombo South Division Criminal Investigation Bureau initiated a thorough inquiry into the matter.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity, investigators identified Selvakumar entering the teacher's residence at approximately 8:20 am on the day of the incident. He was observed leaving the premises at 10:31 am, coinciding with the arrival of a white jeep, prompting him to flee the scene.
During the investigation, it was uncovered that Selvakumar, arriving without a mask, hastily departed the crime scene wearing one. He was arrested at the Dematagoda Siyapat Sewana housing complex.
It was revealed that Selvakumar, a frequent visitor to the teacher's home for hired work, had confessed to the crime during questioning. The teacher had invited him inside for tea while he was working in the garden. Motivated by an unhealthy infatuation, Selvakumar covered the victim's head with a cloth, attempting to rape her. When the teacher resisted and screamed, he perpetrated the heinous act by strangling her with a wire from a nearby polisher, investigations revealed.
After fleeing the scene, Selvakumar returned to the house at approximately 3:20 pm on the same day to steal two gas cylinders, a laptop, and a mobile phone.
The suspect is now in custody, and to be presented in court.
