In a significant operation, the Sri Lanka Customs Revenue Task Force intercepted a gift pack from Italy containing Hashish, a cannabis variety, with an estimated value exceeding Rs.61 million.
The Customs spokesman revealed that the discovery took place last evening at a private cargo clearing yard in Seeduwa.
The scrutiny of the package, which arrived via courier service and was addressed to a recipient in Homagama, revealed that it had been declared as food items. However, upon inspection, Customs officials unearthed over four kilograms of the prohibited narcotic drug, Hashish, cleverly concealed within the seemingly innocuous gift pack.
Subsequently, an individual representing the contraband's clearance was apprehended by Customs officials. The suspect has since been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations into the origin and distribution network of the illicit substance.
