A compensation amounting to Rs. 4.2 million has been granted to the family of Sub-Inspector Upul Chaminda who was killed in a tragic shooting incident in Weligama on December 31, 2023

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, showing solidarity and support for the bereaved family, contributed a substantial sum of Rs. 2.5 million while the Sri Lanka Police Department contributed Rs. 1.7 million towards the compensation, emphasizing their commitment to assisting the families of fallen officers.

The solemn ceremony for the disbursement of funds took place with Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles presenting Rs. 2.5 million on behalf of the President, while Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon handed over Rs. 1.7 million to the family.

The tragic incident unfolded during a police raid near a Weligama hotel, resulting in the untimely death of SI Upul Chaminda and injuring another police officer.
