In a move to strengthen international cooperation in nuclear security, the United States National Nuclear Security Administration and the Sri Lanka Navy are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at preventing the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials.
The proposal for this agreement has navigated through various regulatory bodies in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of National Planning have thoroughly examined the draft MoU. Furthermore, the Attorney General has given the necessary clearance, endorsing the legal aspects of the agreement.
Taking note of the comprehensive scrutiny and approvals received, the Cabinet of Ministers has given its nod to the proposal. The approval was presented by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Defense, highlighting the national security significance of the collaboration.
