Customs Media Spokesman Seevali Arukgoda announced today that Sri Lanka Customs has accomplished an unprecedented milestone by achieving record revenue exceeding Rs. 900 billion in 2023.
This achievement follows closely on the heels of the department's historic revenue of Rs. 970 billion in the previous year, marking the highest annual total in its history.
The remarkable feat for 2023 demonstrates a remarkable 138% increase compared to the revenue collected in 2022. Despite facing economic challenges, the Ministry of Finance initially set a target of Rs. 1,217 billion for 2023, later revised to Rs. 893 billion. However, the Customs department not only surpassed the revised target but also set a new record in annual revenue.
It is noteworthy that while 2023 marks the highest annual revenue ever recorded, a significant achievement in 2018 saw Sri Lanka Customs collecting Rs. 923 billion. This sustained success underscores the department's crucial role in contributing to the country's fiscal strength and highlights its resilience in navigating economic fluctuations over the years.
